| Halong bay - Rock climbing
There are over 3000 limestone islands in the Ha Long bay region of Vietnam and we hardly scratched the surface in our two week quest to explore them. It's unusual to spend an entire climbing trip on a boat, but then it's unusual to do over 40 new routes without using a rope. It seemed pointless to mess around with a drill when we'd just found Deep Water Soloing paradise. Ho Chi Minh crosses the ceiling of a remarkable stalactite infested through-cave and I climbed it from the bottom up, over two days of effort. Take plenty of pairs of rock shoes and chalk if you go to Ha Long Bay and watch out for pirates - there are more of them in this part of the South China Sea than any other of the World's oceans!

Our three days in Ha Long Bay were the best of our trip to Viet Nam. Everything that was promised was fultilled. Our captain brought us to all the beautiful climbs. We ate wonderful food and loved the boat we stayed on. This trip was perfect for climbers or any one else who wants a comfortable, fun trip through Halong Bay.

Halong bay is an amazing place to climb. There are countless beautiful limestone faces and the potential is incredible for both rope climbing and psycho bouldering ( deep water soloing ).
There are many wonderful routes, but you must be careful as the bolts and rappell biners corrode within a few years due to the ocean air.
Bringing many ''Å“leaver'' biners and cord is advised. For those looking to take advantage of the untouched faces and put up some new routes, It is advised to use the stainless steel glue-ins that have been adopted by those in Railay and Tonsai, near Krabi, Southern Thailand .
The bay is large and sadly, due to fear of thieves, we were not able to stay overnight near the eastern climbing spots. This resulted in many good climbing hours wasted driving both morning and evening. Another small hindrance that many routes have limited time due to the tides.
The base of some routes are under water a large partition of the day, while much psycho bouldering requires a high tide. However the periods of waiting never seem to carry with it the frustration often associated because one simply need to glance around to be calmed by the serene scenery.

Day 1: Hanoi - Hai Phong - Catba
Pick up at your hotel in Hanoi and drive towards Hai Phong City. Upon arrival Binh port, boarding the express boat to Catba. Check into hotel. Relax and overnight in Catba.
Day 2: Full Day Rock Climbing
9: 00AM-9: 05AM Depart Cat Ba Town to Ben Beo
9: 10AM-9: 45AM Cruise through Lan Ha Bay to Moody’s Island Beach
10: 15AM-12: 30PM Rock Climb on Moody’s Beach (option kayaking)
1: 00PM-2: 00PM Lunch and transfer to Hai Pai Island Beach
2: 15PM-4: 30PM Rock Climb on Hai Pai Beach (option kayaking)

Cast off into Lan Ha Bay, an area of Ha Long Bay that is lightly traveled, clean, and astounding in pure beauty. After cruising through a maze of karst towers you will arrive at the secluded and uninhabited Moody’s Island beach with sea water caressing two shorelines beneath a massive limestone cliff. You're certified climbing guides will outfit you with safe and comfortable UIAA standard climbing harnesses and rock climbing gear. After brief instruction your guides will set up top-rope systems on a variety of different routes so that you may ascend the rock face safely and worry free. With the coaching of our experienced guides, climb as high as you’d like overlooking the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay and enjoy a spectacular view unlike any other.
Spend the morning challenging yourself on different routes, which will no doubt leave you hungry for more…..or at least hungry for food! We'll set you up a full spread of lunch while everyone can chat about their unique experiences and feelings while climbing.
After lunch, you’ll de-board at the amazing Hai Pai Island Beach, a gorgeous strip of secluded beach framed by two spectacular limestone cliffs. Some may want to kayak through the bay into hidden lagoons; others may want to continue climbing on the new cliffs of Hai Pai Beach. Or swimming and lounging may suit some….no worries…this is island life! No forced itinerary will allow you to choose your own adventure. Take it as it comes and our guides will be there to help make it happen!
This excursion is designed for any age with or without athletic ability and no necessary prior experience rock climbing.
Notes:
1. Downgrades will always be initiated by Slo Pony Adventures and Vietnam Discovery Travel, usually based on inclement weather or extenuating circumstances.
2. Junk used for cruising. If customers require pick-up in North Ha Long Bay an additional petrol fee may be added and morning climbing time will be reduced based on travel time.
3. Kayaks and kayaking available all day for no additional charge
